The equestrian statue of Nicholas I, standing in the centre of St. Isaac’s Square, was made by sculptor Piotr Klodt after a design by Montferrand, and was the latter’s last work. The tsar is shown in his uniform from the cavalry regiment. The pedestal is decorated with high-reliefs evoking episodes from his reign (not exactly brilliant, to be sure, since the people nicknamed him “Bloody Nicholas” after crushing the Decembrists’ uprising).
