The largest bookshop in St. Petersburg (nearly 3,000 m²) is located in the old Singer sewing machine building erected in the early 20C. The company wanted a majestic - and very tall - building on the city’s finest avenue. But it couldn’t be higher than the Winter Palace! So architect P. Suzor came up with a clever trick: a dome crowned by a glass globe that could be seen from afar.
