Built by Ivan the Terrible in the 15C to commemorate the capture of Kazan, Dormition Cathedral and its five starry domes stand in the centre of the lavra. It contains magnificent 17C frescoes by artists from Yaroslav and a five-level iconostasis with 76 icons, two of which are by Simon Uchakov (the Dormition and the Annunciation). In front of the west door lies the tomb of Boris Godunov, the only tsar who is not in the Moscow Kremlin.
