In the 11C Ålborg was a well-established Viking port with a fishing fleet and regular trade links with Norway. Situated at the narrowest point of Limfjorden, it is now Denmark's fourth largest city and the main economic and cultural centre of north Jutland. Industrialisation and the advent of the railways in the 19C helped influence the appearance of the modern town. Ålborg owes much of its fame to its dynamism and avant-gardism, symbolised by its splendid Museum of Modern Art.
