This charming old market town with a vibrant, Mediterranean-style atmosphere was the site of a lively market during the Middle Ages, with a major commercial port exporting cattle and horses. Unfortunately, Tønder suffered numerous floods because of its lowland environment; in the 16C, the town was surrounded by dikes to combat this, and it lost its port as a result. Prosperity returned to the town in the 18C with the growth of the lace industry.
