Bryggen used to be the heart of the medieval town. This area is now the only one to boast the timber buildings whose architecture typifies the famous Kontore established throughout northern Europe by the Hanseatic League. Painstakingly restored, aligned in rows separated by narrow passages, these buildings painted yellow, ochre or in red brick were used as homes, warehouses and workshops in former times. Those along the quays that have survived are a UNESCO world heritage site.
