The market square located at the water's edge in the heart of the city is the liveliest place in Bergen. The daily fish market draws in crowds of people, who size up the shellfish, herring and smoked salmon on the stalls, or tuck into salmon or “caviar” sandwiches. Fruit and vegetables, flowers, and arts and crafts are also for sale. Torget is the departure point for boat trips to the nearby islands. The Stock Exchange opposite has been turned into the tourist office (see the fresco hall).
