Bibendum
Maihaugen is one of the finest open-air museums in Norway, first and foremost thanks to its location on the mountainside, overlooking the centre of Lillehammer. But also on account of the impressive number of wooden buildings grouped together here on a 396ha area of woodland. Dedicated to safeguarding the rural heritage and bringing the region's architectural diversity to the fore, this museum, created in 1904, presents around 150 traditional 18C and 19C houses, which have been painstakingly reconstructed. A stave church was transported from Lom and reconstructed as it was in the 18C. In summer, people and animals live in the Øygarden farm and craftsmen work in the workshops. The interior museum has a superb ethnography collection of craftsmen's workshops and folk art objects.
