Akershus Fortress Interesting : Michelin's recommendations

Built by Hakon V c 1300 with a feudal castle layout (four massive towers show its defensive role), the fortress faces the sea in defiance of all attempts to invade from this direction. It was burned down, and then Christian IV turned it into a Renaissance palace in the early 17C. The monarchy abandoned it in the 19C in favour of the Royal Palace, and since then it has been used for official functions. It is a pretty place for a walk, offering some lovely views of the fjord. The fortress houses Norway's Resistance Museum, which illustrates the history of the occupation of Norway during the Second World War.
