Inaugurated in spring 2008, the new Operahuset, to the east of the city centre, was designed by the Norwegian architects' firm Snøhetta and cost €525 million to build. This architectural feat - part of the building is below sea level - was awarded the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 2009. The design calls to mind an iceberg emerging from the fjord, on the edge of which it has been built. Visitors can climb onto its sloping roof. It is home to the Opera company and the National Ballet, and boasts three concert halls.
