Town centre : Michelin's recommendations

In 1969 a fire destroyed a number of the town centre's traditional wooden houses. Nonetheless, enough of these remain for the town to have retained part of its 19C character. To start your visit of Tromsø, head down along the side of the strait: there, the coastal Express stops every afternoon and you can admire the panoramic view of Tromsøbrua, a boldly constructed bridge that rises very high above the pale blue waters, while the backdrop of the snowcapped Storsteinen looms large on the horizon. The Arctic Cathedral, built in 1965, forms a triangle at the end of the bridge, on the Tromsdalen side. Then go along the port side, which is lined with wooden warehouses with dark red-painted walls, typical of the region.
