Despite the fire in 1969, the town centre has retained some of its 19C heritage. Storgata is the main shopping street. Sjøgata, Vestregate, Havnegata and the quays are lined with interesting buildings. The cathedral (1861), topped with a slender arrow, is one of the oldest wooden churches in the country. The Polar Museum, housed in a former warehouse, retraces the major exploratory and hunting expeditions in the arctic regions. Polaria, just outside of the centre, offers an appealing polar experience and zoological collections.
