This vast, untamed region is uninhabited (with the exception of a handful of Sami); lying between the shore of the lake and the Swedish border, it has a wealth of conifers, lakes and rivers. The national park is accessible via the road from the southern end of the lake. The Svukuriset cabin in Elgå is the ideal departure point for walks and angling expeditions in the national park. In summer, a boat makes regular crossings, stopping off at several points between Synnervika in the north and Femundsenden in the south.
