Kristiansand's historic quarter lies along the river. The white houses, some of which date from the 17C, are offset by the brightly coloured door and window frames; the tiled roofs and wrought-iron banisters add a cheerful note to this picture-perfect provincial landscape. The cathedral, rebuilt in the late 19C in the neo-Gothic style, stands on the market square (Torget).
