Kungälv : Michelin's recommendations

Destroyed several times, Kungälv was rebuilt at the foot of the mighty Bohus Fortress, on the island of Fästningsholmen, in 1613. Then, in 1676, the town was moved and built along a single road, due to lack of space. Nowadays, Gamla Torget, Östra Gatan and Västra Gatan, with their attractive wooden buildings (18C-19C) painted in pastel colours, make up the town's picturesque centre. The timber church was built in 1679 and its plain white exterior belies the richly coloured Baroque interior.
