The gorgeous little town of Mariefred, located in one of Lake Mälaren's coves, is linked to Stockholm by a pretty hundred-year-old steamboat, S/S Mariefred. Mariefred developed around a Carthusian monastery (Pax Mariae) founded in 1493 by the lord of Gripsholm. In the 18C, Gustav III was behind the construction of buildings such as the Gustavian-style town hall on Rådhustorget, which houses the tourist office.
