A 17C vegetable garden was transformed in the 18C into the Baroque-style Kungsträdgården, which were enclosed by walls and reserved for the royal family. After the death of Gustav III the gardens were opened to the public. Today people gather here to take part in chess tournaments or games of boules or to stroll around. To the south, the gardens open onto the east façade of the opera house and its elegant restaurant, Operakällaren. Its night club, Café Opera, is renowned for its celebrity clientele – and long queues.
