Starting at the city itself and strewn over a distance of almost 70km off the Baltic coast, the incredibly beautiful Stockholm Archipelago reaches from north to south over almost 140km. It encompasses 24 000 islands and reefs, and, while only 150 are inhabited year round, there are some 50 000 summer residences! Numerous artists and writers have fallen under the charm of the islands, which have been immortalised in literature by August Strindberg (The People of Hemsö), and in painting by artists such as Bruno Liljefors and Anders Zorn.
