The "Main Square" is the highest point of the island. In the Middle Ages, the market place and stocks were here, and it was the site of the tragic "blood bath" of 1520 when 82 heads were cut off and displayed by order of the Danish King Christian II. The Stock Exchange (1776) on the north side has two different activites under one roof. While traders run about the ground floor, the august members of the Swedish Academy occupy the other floors.
