A tour of the cathedral gives a clear idea of the past splendour of other churches that are now in ruin. The church was founded by German merchants and quickly became the parish of Visby's German community. The original basilica (1175-1225) was extended and transformed into a vast church with three naves of equal height (1230-1260). In the early 14C, the towers were raised.
