A wealthy merchant from Gothenburg, John Hall, bought the estate of Gunnebo in 1778 and entrusted the construction of his summer home to city architect, Carl Wilhelm Carlberg. Carlberg did not stop at drawing up the layout of the building, but also designed the furniture, furnaces and fabrics, the outhouses, gardens and terraces, as well as landscaping the surrounding grounds. The restoration carried out between 1995 and 1999 has not detracted from this strong aesthetic unity.
