The District Six Museum provides a chance to explore the old quarter of the same name, from the days when it was teeming with a multiracial population of various denominations. From 1966 to 1982 District Six was emptied of its non-white population and its non-religious buildings were razed. The apartheid government wanted to attract Whites into this area near the city centre and the Castle of Good Hope after rehabilitating it. To this day, the neighbourhood has remained in part a no man’s land despite the desire of its former inhabitants to win it back.
