Rest areas along the whale route in the Overberg, between the Cape and Hermanus, offer a chance to watch the whales that come here to give birth. The string of sandy coves, beaches and seaside resorts is set against a backdrop of magnificent untamed landscapes. Take a break at Betty’s Bay, where a penguin colony lives, and at the mouth of the Bot River occupied by wild horses. Along the way, the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens have preserved a type of vegetation characterised by small scrubland bushes called fynbos.
