Grahamstown
: Michelin's recommendations
British settlers created Grahamstown in the early 19C, when thousands of Xhosa were killed or displaced. The historic centre has retained a very British look with many religious buildings connected to the Anglican church and Victorian houses that belonged to the old settlers. One of them, the Observatory Museum, contains a camera obscura with beautiful views of the town. Grahamstown also has one of the country’s largest universities. The students and local artists make the town a bit more lively, as does the well-known National Arts Festival.
