Although The Owl House is often the main reason why people come to Nieu Bethesda, this typical Karoo village is also worth seeing for its authenticity. Its name refers to the miraculous pool of water from the Bible, evoking the valley’s fertility. Sheep farming is the main economic activity here, as in a number of other villages in the region, along with vegetable farming. Climbing up the Kompasberg (2,504 m), the highest peak in the Sneeuberg range overlooking Nieu Bethesda, is another local excursion.
