This was one of the first African museum-villages in the country, built by the provincial authorities in the early 1980s, a particularly bold initiative at the time. Ethnologists were brought in to ensure that it was an accurate reflection of the traditional lifestyle of the Northern Sotho. Members of the Matlala Bakone tribe built an authentic village on a 126ha plot of land. The huts, grouped into homesteads (“lapas”) for each of the three wives, are the legacy of age-old architectural techniques using acacia wood.
