Stellenbosch
: Michelin's recommendations
Simon Van der Stel, the governor of Cape Town, founded Stellenbosch in the late 17C. Nowadays the town is in the heart of South Africa’s winegrowing region. It combines a rich architectural legacy and active Afrikaner university, where the word “apartheid” was coined in the early 20C. The lovely homes in the centre, like the ones on Dorp Street, feature various architectural styles – Cape Dutch, Georgian, Victorian – which lend the town a good deal of charm. With its hillsides covered in vineyards, the area has a rather European feel.
