You can’t go to Tulbach, at the foot of the Witzenberg in the Breede Valley, without taking a stroll on Church Street with its string of late 18C Cape Dutch houses listed as historic monuments. One of them contains an exhibition on the 1969 earthquake that caused a great deal of damage to the city. The region and climate are good for wine-growing, mainly sweet wines, but recently some quite respectable reds too.
