Gateway to the Kalahari in the heart of southern Africa, Upington blooms like an oasis of greenery along the Orange River and is the commercial hub for this farming region. The town was first created as a mission and literacy centre in the 1870s, at the request of a local chieftain. The Kalahari-Oranje Museum Complex, housed in the former mission buildings, tells the story of the town and the part it played in the Anglo-Boer Wars.
