Created in 1912, Alexandra, like Klispruit and Soweto, was built to house blacks working in the mines and other industries. They were put up in identical little “match box” houses all in a row, far from Johannesburg where white people lived. Nowadays the inhabitants of this township, one of the poorest in the urban area, live in dire poverty. A guide is imperative if you feel you must visit the township.
