The historical site of the Eersteling gold mine is located about 35km south of Polokwane. It stands in a magnificent natural setting, in the foreground of a broad untamed valley. It was here that Edward Button started the first gold rush in 1871, fifteen years before the one in Johannesburg. A majestic chimney, considered a national monument and once the highest construction in the Transvaal, is a legacy from that prosperous era.
