This vast architectural complex, initiated by President Thabo Mbeki and designed by poet Mongane Wally Serote, stands on a hilltop as a symbolic and democratic answer to the Voortrekker Monument. The public has been asked to propose 136 000 names to be engraved on the 697m-long wall, as a tribute to the victims of all the conflicts that have afflicted South Africa from pre-colonial times to the present. A special section is devoted to foreigners, including Che Guevara and Toussaint Louverture.
