On 24 January 1900, British army troops tried in vain to liberate the town of Ladysmith from the siege inflicted by the Boers by attacking their positions on the slopes of the Spioenkop. Several monuments on the Spioenkop commemorate the battle, one of the biggest in the Anglo-Boer War.
