Alcalá de Henares
: Michelin's recommendations
Alcalá was a major Roman town, but the history of Alcalá, now a Unesco world heritage site, is above all related to its university. It was founded in 1498, excelled in its language tuition and published Europe's first multilingual bible in 1517 (in Latin, Greek, Chaldean and Hebrew). The university was transferred to Madrid in 1836, but is now back in Alcalá. Cervantes, Catherine of Aragon, the daughter of the Catholic kings, and Bustamante, the Renaissance architect, were all born here.
