Alcántara
: Michelin's recommendations
Alcántara is located in a landscape of disintegrated ancient rock enclosing the Tagus. It keeps watch over the old bridge that gave it its name (Al Kantara means “bridge” in Arabic). The Order of St Julian of the Pear Tree, a “religious militia”, became the Order of Alcántara when it was entrusted with defending this fortress in 1218. The gorges surrounding this town witnessed the defeat of the Portuguese by the Duke of Alba in 1580, which saw Philip II take the throne of Portugal.
