Almagro is located in the heart of La Mancha and was the stronghold of the Military Order of the Knights of Calatrava from the 13C to the end of the 15C. Its university enjoyed great renown from 1574 to 1828 and many religious orders established convents here. Elegant façades adorned with coats of arms reflect the town's architectural importance. The town is famous for its lace and aubergines, and is home to a parador, occupying a former 16C Franciscan convent.
