Benito Arias Montano, private tutor to King Philip II (1527-98), as well as librarian at the Escurial and diplomat decided to retire here towards the end of his life and give himself up to contemplation. A hugely understandable choice: the panoramic views are extraordinary. Not far from here, on a little hill, the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles is a popular spot at weekends.
