This charming border town, prehistoric in origin, is located in the south of the province, in a hilly region covered by olive trees. Because of its strategic location, it was a major battleground for Christians and Muslims. Today, Alcalá is a lively agricultural and commercial centre, and birthplace of the great poet Juan Ruiz, known as the Archpriest of Hita, as well as the medieval sculptors Juan Martínez Montañés and Pablo de Rojas.
