Arabic District : Michelin's recommendations
Alhama has preserved an interesting Arabic district that is a must-see. Start with the belveder behind the Church of the Carmelite Convent, where you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view over the famous precipice of the Alhama. Go around the church via the splendid baroque chapel of Jesus of Nazareth to see on the left the former Arab alcazaba, which is now only a simple 19C pastiche, then go up Calle Baja de la Iglesia to the impressive tower of the Church of the Incarnation, which stands between the whitewashed walls of the surrounding houses. Leaving the church on the right, you will see the House of the Inquisition, an Isabelian gothic building that was demolished then rebuilt in the 1950s. On the other side of the tower, you will see the charming Plaza de los Presos where on the right stands the 17C prison and opposite, the fine and perfectly preserved façade of the communal grain store from the 16C. Calle Vendederas leads to an emergency hospital dating back to 1485, the first in the kingdom of Grenada, where the Tourist Office now stands. In this district, you will also see the ruins of the Church of Agonies that is not far from the interesting 16C fountain and the Arab prisons, strange cavities carved out of the rock, which were once used as silos and certainly also as prisons.
