Construction of La Cartuja started in 1478, but work continued for most of the following century. The monastery’s Renaissance façade (1571) overlooks a large paved courtyard. The impressive façade of the church has the appearance of a retable divided into four sections. Inside, the single nave is crowned by pointed ogival vaulting. The remarkable choir stalls and cloisters are the work of Martínez Montañés.
