Standing 10km south of the Parque Natural de Despeñaperros, La Carolina owes its name to the Sierra Morena repopulation plan instigated by Charles III (1767), which made this town the focal point of a number of settlements scattered across the mountain. Its wide and straight streets are typical of the orderly town planning of the Age of Enlightenment. St John of the Cross stayed here for a short time, an event commemorated by the statue on Plaza del General Moscardó.
