La Línea de la Concepcíon, 17km east of Algeciras, is one of Spain’s youngest towns. The original 18C hamlet developed alongside bastions built to ward off the English, who had taken possession of the Rock of Gibraltar. La Línea (The Line) only obtained village status in 1870, and was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, in honour of the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the army. There are no sights of particular interest in the centre, which extends around Calle Real and the church.
