This mountainous region is fifty kilometres south of Granada, in an isolated position between the Sierra Nevada and the sea. It was a refuge for the last of the Nasrids (a Moorish dynasty) after the fall of Granada in 1492, then the scene of a Morisco rebellion severely put down in 1569. After sinking into oblivion, Las Alpujarras were rediscovered by romantic travellers in the 19C. Since then visitors have never tired of exploring its white villages whose houses so resemble those you see in Morocco.
