Standing at an altitude of 2 000m, the pass with its high mountain vegetation connects the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada with the northern ones, crossing from Las Alpujarras and Laroles to the Guadix plateau. As the road descends towards Guadix, it affords fine views of the Castillo de la Calahorra.
