Láujar de Andarax : Michelin's recommendations
With its seigniorial mansions and fountains, Láujar de Andarax is the main town on the Almería side of the Alpujarras, not far from the source of the River Andarax. It is the birthplace of Francisco Villaespesa (1877-1936) who introduced the Spanish public to the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío, the Latin American master of modernist poetry.

Town Hall

The town hall is an 18C brick building with a restrained, well-proportioned façade. On the left is a lovely 17C stone fountain called the Pilar de los Cuatro Caños (fountain with four spouts).

Parish Church of the Incarnation

The parish church is a 16C brick building. In the nave, note the fine Baroque altarpiece adorning the high altar, and an Immaculate Conception by Alonso Cano (1601-67), a painter from Granada and a contemporary of Zurbarán and Velásquez.
