Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Victory : Michelin's recommendations
The Catholic Monarchs in the 15C founded the church of N.-D.-de-la-Victoire, a simple brick built building with a doorway and a bell wall and it was rebuilt at the end of the 17C. The interior is particularly representative of the Baroque Andalusian style, relatively modest, where only certain architectural elements have some plant decor. The single nave has side chapels and small balconies above the arches. Notice the corners bearing torches which defy the laws of gravity... A large sculpted retable depicts the scenes from the life of St Francis of Paule. In a chapel to the left there is a particularly expressive Dolorosa by Pedro de Mena. Nevertheless the two most interesting parts are the showy recess, and the crypt, to which access is gained via a Baroque staircase located to the right of the transept. A masterpiece of the most exuberant Baroque style, the showy recess which opens up in the middle of the main retable, is completely carpeted in cherubim, acanthus leaves, mirror holders, shields etc in plaster. There, a superb 15C German Virgin and Child sit, a gift from the Catholic Monarchs after the reconquest. With the recess in a joyful Baroque style, the crypt can still surprise you! The Pantheon of the counts of Buenavista, it is in a gloomy Baroque style with symbols of death and the passing of time.
