Church of St John the Baptist : Michelin's recommendations
This 15C Gothic Mudéjar church stands on a pleasant square with several fine portals. Its simple façade is shoulderd by a belltower with a top decorated in azulejos. It includes five aisles: the three central aisles are topped with an artesonado ceiling, while the two lateral lower sides, added during 16C extensions, have bone vaults. The profusion and quality of the works of art that decorate its walls is truly striking. In the presbiterio, the sumptuous painted and sculpted retable illustrating scenes from the life of Christ dates back to the early 16C; the paintings are by Alejo Fernández and the sculpted groups are by his brother, Jorge. The enclosure of the capilla mayor was completed in a local workshop in the 16C. The wrought iron chairs are from the 18C, just like the enclosure of the coro. The magnificent mahogany and cedar stalls were sculpted in the early 18C by Jerónimo de Balbás; in the gallery (coro alto) there are representations of the saint, while the upper part of the lower coro has small cameos of the Holy Women. The coro is surrounded by the organs, one rococo and the other neo-classical. In the chapel of the Sacred Heart, left of the presbiterio, stands a magnificent 16C sculpted retable by Roque Balduque and Jerónimo Hernández. Note in the centre the interesting arrangement of the Last Supper. Other statues are worth a mention, including the Virgin by Pedro de Mena and the Saint Joseph with the Child, with Saint Joseph by Pedro Roldán.
