The park, with its visitors' centre at Umbria de María, 2km from María, stretches out over the districts of Vélez Rubio, Vélez Blanco, María and Chirivel, covering a mountainous area sometimes reaching 2 000m. It is dotted with huts and leisure areas and has pronounced relief and vegetation consisting of thyme, holm oaks, pines and broom, interspersed with crops.
