Surrounded by gently undulating hills, Montilla is situated in a famous wine-growing region producing Montilla-Moriles appellation wines. From 1375, the Fernández de Córdoba family made the town their fief. It is the birthplace of the most famous member of the family, Gonzalve de Córdoba (1453-1515), better known as the Gran Capitán. Montilla was home to many famous characters in the 16C, a period when its major monuments were built.
