St Claire's Convent : Michelin's recommendations
Pedro Fernández of Córdoba, first marquis of Priego, had this convent built by architect Hernán Ruiz the Elder. Completed in 1524, it was enlarged several times to reach its final size in the 18C. The façade of the church opens via a portal in the flamboyant Gothic style. Above the door, between two circles decorated with crosses, the coat of arms of the marquis of Priego touches the niche containing a statue of St Claire. See the artesonado above the nave and the large retable. When you leave the convent, pass under an arch to reach some flat ground, called Llano de Palacio. Here you will find the palace of the dukes of Medinaceli, which is the same age as the convent, and was built by the marquis of Priego (who became the dukes of Medinaceli) after their castle was destroyed.
