Church of the Ascension : Michelin's recommendations

Church dating back to the 18C. Note the fine tower that is like many buildings in Ecija, and stands in the centre of the façade, above the redbrick baroque portal. The decoration on the belltower wall (miniature, twisted and Greek columns) is covered by blue azulejos. Inside, harmony reigns with a vast nave and transept covered by a central cupola and edges decorated with plant-shaped plasterwork. The nave contains pilasters that hold up a cornice which itself is decorated with plasterwork. Alternating gates on the balcony and the lateral chapels that used to lead onto the nave have gone because the walls separating them were removed to create two narrow collaterals. Note the fine baroque retable.
